Breckenridge Tourism, History and Community Guides

Welcome to Breckenridge, Colorado.

Breckenridge was settled as a mining town in the late 1850's. The town grew with each new gold discovery to include many hotels, restaurants, saloons, and other businesses. With the onset of dredge mining, the town was set with a big decision: Move the town to make way for the dredge boats or risk losing the gold that lay hidden beneath it. The town decided to move the real estate to find gold. This real estate venture was a success and one that would lead to more real estate success in the future.

The onset of World War II ended gold dredging and Breckenridge's population dropped to just over 200 people. Until Breckenridge Ski Resort emerged in 1961, the town was desolate, town buildings had become rundown, and Hoosier Pass was still a dirt road. The town was kick-started into prosperity with the discovery of the promise of snow, dubbed "White Gold." Development in town grew as the mountain above it stretched across Peaks 8, 9, 10, and lastly, 7. With the addition of the alpine slide, now Peak 8 Fun Park, Breckenridge became a four-season destination and moved towards becoming a year-round residential area. Sales of first and second homes started a steady climb that still continues today.

Breckenridge Ski Resort passed hands a number of times before Vail Resorts bought it in 1997. Vail was the first company to truly embrace real estate development and, thus, created another boom in Breckenridge. The 295 acres of real estate that surrounds the mountain was bought and led the way for stores, restaurants, hotels, condos, and luxury homes to appear on prime sites throughout the area. The success of the Town of Breckenridge comes from a great mountain paired with a Victorian-era town that is as charming as it is welcoming. The rich gold and silver mining heritage combined with the beautiful Ten Mile Range as a backdrop ensures that the future of Breckenridge will be as successful as its past.
